The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal court to
charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.


Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a "casting couch" ploy to
groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties
at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.

After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held
in custody in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip
on Long Island, to the east of New York City.



Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up
by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from
the US attorney's office for the eastern district of New York.


An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared to be
a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith, Jeffries and Jacobson.

Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late
October.

Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to 2014, is accused of creating and maintaining a ring that recruited
young men to have sex with him and Smith.

Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and
Jacobson used a combination of "force, fraud and coercion" to traffic men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.


Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest the scale was probably much larger and have appealed for witnesses and victims
to come forward.

Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and Smith and to hotels in Britain, France,
Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.

Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.


Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges
as the other defendants and was released on half a million dollars bond in October.

a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove
a single peppermint tree growing in the middle
of their driveway.

The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth's Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August.


They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds
the tree was not dead or deceased.?

'We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,' Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council
meeting.?

'I'm quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree
in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse out.'

The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting
last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the?condition they paid a
$2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.


They will also need to plant two replacement trees
on their property.

'I think it meets both the owners' wants, or expectation,
but also matches the council's needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge of that property,' he said.


Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove
any mature trees on private property without council approval.



Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he?hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove would 'take a common sense approach' to the issue.


'This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.

I've always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense
approach to issues,' Mr Carey told the?West Australian.?

'And I understand people are passionate about trees.
But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.'

According to the online listing for the four-bedroom,
four-bathroom mansion - which is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River - the

'I think it meets both the owners' wants, or expectation, but also matches the council's needs at the same

Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any mature trees on private property without council approval.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) - The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar, but
is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect
Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese
economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump's policies are expected
to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from
falling too much. "We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment," Lynn
Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.



However, "we don't expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies." The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per
dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.

Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996
hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and "the USD's consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building" in the yuan,
aided by ongoing attempts by China's central bank to restrain its decline,
said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.


Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China's economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China's "economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature," said John Browning,
managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn't expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week's Central Economic Work Conference, as "Beijing's largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins." Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.


But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched
indicators globally for clues of Beijing's near-term policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced until an annual

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country's movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.


Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and
dining the nation's political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.

It was a time before Alan Joyce's tenure as the CEO of
Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the comparatively
lowly budget airline, Jetstar.

And unlike Anthony Albanese's current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year,
the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.?

The election that was looming was the 'Kevin 07' landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his
own seat.?

The issue which blew open the 'guilty secret' of the Chairman's Lounge then wasn't about a prime minister's privileges,
although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.?

But when?broadcaster Steve Price - himself a long time Chairman's Lounge member - revealed a
politically charged remark made within the club's hallowed walls, the
cat was out of the bag.

The political revelation - a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned
on if it won government - did not deter his party from romping in on election day.


In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese
about his Chairman's Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and
their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.? ?

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman's
Lounge member since 2002 during a row before the
2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about the VIP club

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of
Garrett's remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.


In a first person piece he wrote: 'The Chairman's Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal
Qantas Club.?

'As its name implies, the people given access to it are
approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.?

'I have been a Chairman's Lounge member since 2002.'

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also
a member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only
witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.


Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge's exclusive
membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a
private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians such
as PM Anthony Albanese and the former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce (above) as 'alarmingly cosy'

'Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership
of its Chairman's Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and
business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?' demanded Crikey reporter
Stephen Mayne at the time.

'The Chairman's Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,' he said, accusing Price of breaking 'a
confidence'.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO
by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club's hushed confines.


Qantas Chairman's Lounge membership was 'so exclusive that you have
to be personally invited by the airline's chieftain', Nine newspapers reported in 2008.



'A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and
powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who
will be travelling cattle class.

'Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.

'Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged
exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge 'which most of their spouses got too' in their
pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.


Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage
as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.


Asked if all MPs got the captain's pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline's spokesperson?
told Nine: 'We like to retain a bit of mystery.?Membership is by invitation only and it
is reviewed periodically.'

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has
accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only
lounge with one even describing it as an 'entitlement'.?

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the 'very,
very high-end perk' gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country's politicians.


They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman's Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston,
which has stirred up the controversy.?

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members' interest registers - in both Federal Parliament's House of
Representatives and the Senate - revealed almost 93
per cent of the nation's leaders have been 'gifted' membership to the lavish,
all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.?

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades 'have been declared as
appropriate. What's appropriate is transparency.'??

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry
and all 12 assistant ministers.

David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians who have disclosed they have taken up free membership
to the contentious club.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.


Last year it was reported that?Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies
are members of the Chairman's Lounge despite regulating the airline.?

Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams,
Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.



Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts,
frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.?

Touted as 'the most exclusive club in the country', membership to
the Chairman's Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland
Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.


Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent
Commission Against Corruption and a director of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored
all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.


'There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman's Club membership,' he said.



'You're taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the public.
Why not sit with them while you're waiting for a plane?'

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time
author dreams of - massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.?

And it was all thanks to?Anthony Albanese's?ill-informed
attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman's Lounge - The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.


Despite the resultant terrible publicity - which has led
to him being called 'upgrade Albo' - and calls for an inquiry, Aston told
Daily Mail Australia his book is 'not a hit job on Anthony
Albanese'.

Aston insisted he's 'not trying to get a scalp', but reiterated
that the Prime Minister 'had a direct line to Alan Joyce'.


The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas?flights by personally requesting them from the airline's then CEO Mr Joyce - which the Prime
Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas 'insiders', 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were 'privately funded' and included overseas trips to Rome,
London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.?

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the
messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.?

He said?Aston was using the accusations to
sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.?

'I don't see declarations that he's a former Liberal Party staffer… I don't see declarations he's a former Qantas employee,' the Prime Minister said.?

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is
a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior
adviser.?

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held
the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.?

'My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it's in the first line of the first page of the book,' Aston said
on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.?

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr
Albanese's response gave the book, Aston was still
'staggered' at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.?

'He's under enormous pressure and I know, I've seen this many times
with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they
create,' he said.

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.


Coming on top of Mr Albanese's tone deaf purchase of
a?$4.3million clifftop mansion?while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage
or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to
calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.?

'I never expected this (part of the book) to even this
part to get this far. I really am shocked at how it's blown up.

'They're the best influence peddler in Australia. I'm not here trying to get a scalp.
That's not what this book is about and it never was.'

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.?

'Even I've underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie

'And unfortunately for Albanese, he's been in politics
a long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I've seen.?

'I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front
row of the Australian Open Tennis.?

'I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was
the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

'Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of
the International Grand Slam. He's the first Prime Minister
who I've ever seen do that.

'That to me is a sign that he doesn't quite get
what it looks like to others when he's on the gravy train.?And I think (the claims in the
book are) just another example of that.'

In Australian politics it's regular practise for an MP's travel to be booked
in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and
asks if their flight can be upgraded.?

The difference with the Prime Minister is that 'he
had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,' Aston said.

'The other thing is there's a difference between an upgrade
where it's in the booking and if the seat's empty when the flight closes, you'll
get upgraded.

'This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the
ticket is converted and you are guaranteed. You're not going
to the airport crossing your fingers going "Geez, I hope there is a spare seat".




'You're guaranteed. You turn up knowing you're getting
a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of
upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.

'So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).'

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.?

'These things are tempting and it's human nature too. Once you've experienced the front of the plane,
it's very hard to go back.

'For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they've got
chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don't get paid like CEOs ...


'They're not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.?

'A normal person would say "Therefore I won't (fly business class).?But (for politicians) it's a culture of entitlement.'

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are 'very well paid compared to the average worker'.

But that doesn't stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it's a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.?


Late on Wednesday night, a?spokeswoman Mr Albanese said 'The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade'.

'All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.'

April 21 (Reuters) - A longtime Russian business associate of American tobacco giant
Philip Morris International Inc - a billionaire whose holdings have included a major
stake in a weapons plant supplying Russia´s military - has
been sanctioned in Europe for aiding Russia´s
invasion of Ukraine, according to a Reuters review of business
registries and sanctions lists.

Igor Kesaev, 55, listed by Forbes as Russia´s 35th-richest person last year, was sanctioned April 13 by the
United Kingdom and on April 8 by the European Union. The EU noted in its sanctions document that Kesaev´s holdings in tobacco distribution and weapons production are funneling "substantial" revenue to the Russian Federation to fund its "destabilisation of Ukraine."

Kesaev owned a 49% share in the V.A. Degtyarev plant,
located 165 miles northeast of Moscow, which makes machine
guns, anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons that are sold to the Russian military and countries in the Middle East, North Africa and
Latin America, according to Russian business
records as of Dec. 31 and the plant´s website.
The plant is known for producing Kalashnikov PKM and PKTM
machine guns, as well as Kord rifles and machine guns, some of which are
mounted on armored vehicles. Kesaev´s interest in the weapons business dates back to at least
2012, Degtyarev´s corporate filings show.

Kesaev spokesperson Anatoly Shiryaev told Reuters in an emailed statement Wednesday that
Kesaev "currently is not a shareholder" in Degtyarev and "isn´t part of its management." Shiryaev didn´t respond to follow-up questions
or requests to provide documentation of Kesaev´s exit from
the arms business.

The Degtyarev plant´s 2021 annual report - released April 14 - listed
Kesaev as holding a 49% stake in the factory. Alexander Tmenov, the plant´s general director, referred to Kesaev as "our main shareholder" in an in-house publication dated
March 16 and posted on the Degtyarev facility´s website.
In its April 8 sanctions document, the EU referred
to Kesaev as "the major shareholder of Degtyarev Plant."

Until recently, Kesaev was also the board chairman of a sprawling Russian tobacco distribution company, TC Megapolis JSC.
And he was a board member of that firm's Dutch holding company, in which Philip
Morris, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, has a 23% stake.
Kesaev resigned both posts April 11, according to Philip Morris and a TC Megapolis
JSC press release.

He retains ultimate control of Megapolis, however, according to the
EU. In its sanctions statement, the EU said Kesaev is the president and owner of Mercury Group, which owns Megapolis, "the leading tobacco distributor in Russia."

In his emailed statement, Kesaev spokesperson Shiryaev said the businessman "isn´t part of the Megapolis Group´s management and therefore doesn´t comment on Megapolis' relations with (Philip Morris)."

Reuters couldn´t determine the size of Kesaev´s stake
in the holding company, Megapolis Distribution BV.
A December report from Russia-focused business news service Interfax
said Kesaev and a longtime business associate, Sergei Katsiev, together owned 52.8%.
The April 11 Megapolis press release said Kesaev is not a controlling or majority
shareholder in the distribution company or any of its subsidiaries,
and that he doesn´t influence or make decisions about the business.


Philip Morris´ ties with Kesaev date to the early 1990s,
when the entrepreneur helped the American firm navigate post-Soviet Russia and tap its coveted market of heavy smokers, according
to news reports. That relationship could now prove a public-relations nightmare for the company.

Images of Russian armaments pounding Ukraine have horrified much of
the world, putting pressure on Western brands
to cut ties to Russia and the oligarchs who dominate
its economy - much less one with a track record of supplying arms to Russia´s military.


There´s "a reputational risk. Like, 'what the hell is Philip Morris doing dealing with this guy?'"
said Daniel Fried, a former U.S. diplomat who coordinated sanctions policy for the Obama administration following Russia´s 2014 annexation of Crimea.



The Degtyarev weapons factory has referred to standing contracts to supply Russia´s navy, air force
and ground forces in press releases on its website.


Reuters was unable to confirm definitively whether weapons made at
the plant are being used in Russia´s invasion of Ukraine, though evidence pieced together by the
news agency supports that conclusion.

Philip Morris in an emailed statement said the company and its subsidiaries "comply with all applicable sanctions."
The multinational said it has already taken steps to scale down its operations in Russia and
was working on options to exit in an "orderly" fashion. It provided no timeline or additional details on how such an exit would work.
Philip Morris said last month it had suspended all marketing activities in Russia, was canceling all new product launches there, and that it had
discontinued some products, though it did not specify which ones.


In a March statement about the situation in Ukraine, Philip Morris International
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said of his company: "We stand in solidarity with the innocent men, women and children who are suffering."

Over the past three decades, Kesaev´s distribution muscle has helped
Philip Morris, the world´s largest tobacco company by market capitalization, win more than a quarter of Russia´s cigarette market.
Russia generated revenue of more than $1.8 billion last year for Philip Morris, around
6% of the New York-based company´s global sales,
the firm´s financial and press statements show. Philip Morris´ factory outside St.
Petersburg is the largest in its global empire, according to the company website.


Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly decried Western sanctions on his country and some
of its business titans. Last month he called these penalties an attempt
"to deliver a blow to our entire economy, our social and cultural sphere, every family and every Russian citizen."

Russia has portrayed its invasion of Ukraine as a "special operation" to demilitarize
and "denazify" its much smaller, democratic neighbor.


While Reuters couldn´t substantiate conclusively that
Russian fighters in that conflict are using weapons from the Degtyarev arms factory, evidence from Ukraine appears to support that determination. The news agency examined part of a Kord machine gun this week at a Kyiv auto mechanic shop
that repairs Russian weapons recovered from the battlefield for re-use by Ukrainian fighters.
The part was likely manufactured at the Degtyarev plant, according to independent weapons expert Damien Spleeters of the London-based research group Conflict Armament Research,
which traces weapons in war zones.

Spleeters examined photos of the Kord machine
gun provided by Reuters. He said that particular Kord weapon is
a type found mounted on tanks, armored personnel carriers and other fighting
vehicles. It bore identifying numbers, etched into the metal.
The shapes and style of those numbers matched those of etchings found on a high-caliber rifle that Conflict Armament Research examined in Ukraine in 2018.
The research group determined at the time that the rifle
- an ASVK typically used to destroy military equipment - was produced at the Degtyarev plant.


"It´s pretty striking, the similarity between the characters there," Spleeters
said.

He added it was "very likely" that other machine guns from the Degtyarev plant are being
used on Russian fighting vehicles in Ukraine.

One of the Kyiv mechanics, Oleksandr Fedchenko, told Reuters in March that he
and a team of welders and engineers conferred with Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines, who removed weapons
from disabled Russian tanks and brought them back to his auto repair shop.



It´s unclear how recently the Kord machine gun was manufactured,
and Reuters could not independently corroborate the mechanics´ accounts that
the weapons were recovered from invading Russian forces.



`DIRTY MONEY´

For Ukrainians, Kesaev´s tobacco and arms businesses have been inextricably
linked.

In 2014, Ukraine´s pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych,
was toppled in a popular uprising, leading to Russia´s annexation of Crimea later that year.
Ukrainian officials, meanwhile, began scrutinizing the role of Russian companies in various sectors of
its economy.

At the time, the firm Trading Company Megapolis-Ukraine was by far the country's largest tobacco distributor,
controlling 99% of the market, according to
research from the Anti-Monopoly Committee of Ukraine, the
nation´s top competition regulator. Ukrainian authorities started drawing attention to Megapolis´ ties to
Kesaev and Russian weapons production.

Kyiv sanctioned Kesaev in 2016 for unspecified actions it said threatened
Ukraine´s national security. A top Ukrainian prosecutor later accused
Kesaev of supporting "terrorist organizations"
by supplying arms to Russian-backed separatist groups that have been fighting for nearly a decade to carve out two independent states - Donetsk
and Luhansk - in resource-rich eastern Ukraine.


Representatives of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic did not respond to requests for comment, while representatives of the
self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic could not be reached for comment.


Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament and former head of the Ukrainian branch of the anti-corruption nonprofit Transparency International,
said multinational companies that continue to do business with Kesaev are helping to fuel Moscow´s
war machine.

"These are the people who are responsible for the...aggression, for more deaths of Ukrainian people," Yurchyshyn told Reuters.

"It´s dirty money."

Philip Morris did not respond to a request for comment on Yurchyshyn´s
assertions.

Other investors in the Degtyarev weapons factory as of Dec.

31, company records show, include Rostec, a Russian state defense
company that has been on the U.S. Treasury Department´s sanctions list since
2014; and NPO High-Precision Systems, another
state weapons company that was named in a round of Treasury Department sanctions in late
March.

Rostec and NPO High-Precision Systems did not respond to requests for
comment.

Kesaev and the Degtyarev plant have not been sanctioned by the United States.
The Treasury Department, which enforces economic sanctions,
declined to comment. The U.S. State Department said
it "cannot preview future sanctions actions," but said it has targeted
Russian oligarchs financing the war and "will continue to act with our allies and partners around the world in imposing costs on the Kremlin" if
the conflict continues.

The entanglement with Kesaev is another sticky public-relations challenge in the
history of the tobacco leviathan, whose parent company once was known as Philip
Morris Companies Inc. Philip Morris Inc, the U.S.
unit, was one of four major tobacco firms that in 1998 agreed to pay an estimated $206 billion, the largest civil settlement in U.S.
history, to compensate states for the costs of smokers whose health was wrecked by their products.


Philip Morris Companies renamed itself Altria Group
Inc in 2003, and in 2008 spun off Philip Morris International into a separate company that sells outside of the United States.
Philip Morris International posted revenue of $31.4 billion last year, with operating
profit of nearly $13 billion.

`EMBEDDED´ IN RUSSIA

Russia is a dream market for international tobacco companies,
with its large population of around 145 million people and one of
the highest smoking rates in the world. More than 40% of men there light up, according to
the World Health Organization. The number of cigarettes sold annually in Russia is
about the same as the United States, though Russia´s population is less than half the size.



In 2020, Philip Morris, Japan Tobacco Inc, and England-based
British American Tobacco Plc and Imperial Brands Plc together comprised
more than 97% of cigarette sales in Russia, according to data from
Bernstein Research, an investment research firm.
Philip Morris alone had a 26% share, with its top
sellers including Parliament and Bond Street, according to Bernstein Research.


U.S. anti-tobacco activist Matthew Myers worked to reduce smoking
in Russia as president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an American nonprofit that has expanded its work globally.
He said the success of foreign cigarette companies in Russia is virtually unmatched by other well-known consumer products firms.


"Western tobacco companies literally took over the industry,"
Myers said. "They are embedded."

Putin in 2020 honored Philip Morris for donating
food to the elderly and providing personal protective equipment to volunteers participating in a Russian COVID-19 aid program.
The company touted the "commemorative medal and a letter of thanks" it received from the president
in a report about its sustainability efforts published last
year on the website of its Russia operation.

Philip Morris said it was one of many local and international businesses recognized in Russia for aid efforts
during the pandemic.

It was the Communists who first opened the door for the firm.

In the 1970s, Philip Morris struck a licensing deal for its Marlboro brand to
be manufactured in the USSR, according to Philip Morris´ website.
It had no corporate presence or factories there, but it persevered.
That arrangement birthed a new brand of cigarettes commemorating the Apollo-Soyuz
joint space mission between the United States and the Soviet Union, which is credited for
raising Philip Morris´ profile with young smokers, tobacco
researchers say.

Opportunity knocked again in 1990, the twilight of Communist
rule, when tobacco shortages triggered widespread protests.
Answering the call from Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Philip Morris,
along with its U.S. competitor R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, agreed to deliver
34 billion cigarettes, according to news accounts and statements
by the companies at the time.

The 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union threw the gates wide open. Philip Morris by 1993 had committed $1 billion to expansion in the region, enabling it to snap up existing factories and build others, company statements and
news accounts show. It brought manufacturing know-how and superior tobacco blends.
It also unleashed slick marketing that celebrated freedom and consumerism, with ads from
the period showing the Marlboro Man cowboy in the wide-open spaces of the
American West and young newlyweds leaving their ceremony on a motorcycle.



Today, Russia is Philip Morris´ second-largest market for tobacco sales, behind Indonesia,
according to the company´s most recent annual report. Excluding banks, insurance firms and investment
companies, Philip Morris in 2021 was the largest foreign company by revenue operating
in Russia, according to a Forbes Russia ranking.


Russian consumers are also major buyers of so-called
reduced-risk products that Philip Morris is banking on to
stave off declining global cigarette sales. Its signature technology is IQOS,
a device that heats tobacco without burning it to create a nicotine-filled
aerosol for smokers to inhale. Russia last year accounted for 17% of Philip Morris´ global IQOS
product sales, a share exceeded only by Japan, according to its most recent annual report.


Retail space is essential for reaching customers. Which is why distributor Kesaev, born near Russia´s border
with Georgia, has been so instrumental to Philip Morris´ success
in Russia.

In the early 1990s, Kesaev started an importing business that worked with international tobacco companies eager to get their products onto store shelves, according to a 2014 profile of the magnate in Forbes magazine´s Russian website.
It said Kesaev spoke excellent English, having graduated from MGIMO University, a prestigious international relations school.
He moved to Switzerland for a time in the 1990s, the website said, where he developed a personal connection with Philip Morris executives at the company´s regional headquarters in Lausanne.



Over time, Kesaev built the largest tobacco distributor in Russia through acquisitions of regional competitors, according to Forbes´ Russian website.

That company, Megapolis, delivers to 160,000 retailers spanning 7,
000 miles, according to the firm's website.
Kesaev is also one of three majority shareholders of Mercury Retail Group,
which operates two large convenience store chains,
according to a December press release from Mercury Retail Group.


In 2013, Philip Morris and rival Japan Tobacco Inc both purchased 20% stakes in Megapolis' holding company for $750 million each, according to the companies.



CLEAN EXIT?

Philip Morris´ long-standing ties to Kesaev and the Russian market, including its
now-23% stake in Megapolis, could make the country hard to quit.


"If you spend a quarter of a century building up a brand portfolio and presence, you´ll be very reluctant to give that up," said
Andy Rowell, a research fellow studying the tobacco industry at England´s University of Bath,
which is part of a global anti-tobacco consortium called STOP.


The company´s connections to Russia are made stickier by the fact that the country is
one of only two markets worldwide - along with Algeria - where
Philip Morris holds an ownership stake in a company tied to a distributor, according to its most
recent annual report. Up until last week, the 12-member board of Megapolis´ Dutch holding company included Kesaev, three of his business associates and four executives from
Philip Morris and Japan Tobacco, according to a Netherlands
business registry.

Of the remaining 11 directors now listed there, seven did not respond to
requests for comment and the others could not be located.


To sever all ties with Russia, Philip Morris
would need to sell its Megapolis stake. The company has not mentioned Megapolis
in any of its recent statements about exiting the Russian market and did not answer Reuters´ questions about plans for its Megapolis investment.


Megapolis said in its April 11 press release
that the EU´s sanctions "in no way affect" the distribution company and its subsidiaries.


The United States and the EU do not ban companies outright
from doing business in Russia, but their sanctions prohibit a wide range
of dealings with entities such as Russia´s central bank, some of its largest
financial institutions and other sanctioned individuals or companies.

U.S. rules also prohibit new investment in Russia by U.S.
citizens or entities, while the EU bans investment in Russia's energy
sector and has blocked a wide range of exports to Moscow worth billions
of euros a year.

Many multinational companies have decided that the optics of doing business in Russia, along with the difficulties in navigating the financial system, aren´t worth it.


Fried, the former U.S. diplomat, says he´s been advising American companies since the
2014 round of Crimea-related sanctions that Russia had become a riskier place for
them to do business. Add in the latest sanctions emanating from its invasion of Ukraine
and he said the potential peril has soared.


"Now it´s sky-high. It´s through the roof," said Fried, now
a fellow at the Atlantic Council, an international affairs think tank
in Washington.

Philip Morris isn´t the only multinational tobacco company
grappling with its future in Russia.

Japan Tobacco, now the biggest player in Russia with more than a third of the market, on March 10 said it was suspending new investments and marketing activities in Russia but stopped short of committing to an exit.
The Japanese government owns a third of Japan Tobacco.


Japan Tobacco said it is "committed to complying with all applicable national and international sanctions imposed on Russia," adding that Kesaev is no longer on the
board of Megapolis or involved in managing the company as of April 11.
In a statement, Japan´s Ministry of Finance said it believed Japan Tobacco´s
management "will take appropriate and timely action with the situation in accordance with relevant laws and regulations."

British American Tobacco Plc said it would leave Russia and told Reuters in March it would likely sell to its longtime distributor.
That firm, Russia-based SNS Group of Companies, last month told the news agency that the process of transferring BAT´s business to SNS was "well under way." BAT said it had no further comment.


Imperial Brands Plc, with less than 10% of the Russian market, said last month it would cease sales and operations there.

The company told Reuters it is in talks with a "local third party" to sell its
business, but declined to elaborate.

With foreign companies dominating Russia´s tobacco market, there is no major domestic operator that could make up the supply if all four companies
stopped selling. Western sanctions could complicate efforts by Russian importers to buy the products abroad.


Callum Elliott, an analyst at Bernstein Research, said it´s possible Philip Morris could license its brands to a Russian company.

After all, that´s how it got started in Soviet times.
But Elliott said such a strategy carries potential risks
for Philip Morris after so many decades operating
there because a licensee might "impair the value of the brand."

Philip Morris declined to comment.

As for Kesaev, his purported exit from the arms
business comes amid sanctions that may also cloud the prospects for his
tobacco empire.

But at the Degtyarev weapons plant, business has been booming.

in April 2022 and was 'open to filming in Los Angeles if the

The foreign secretaries of Bangladesh and India met
in Dhaka to discuss the strained relations between the
two neighbours, including the growing tensions after former Bangladeshi premier Sheikh Hasina fled into exile in India in August.


This is the first high-level visit by an Indian official since massive protests ended Ms Hasina's 15-year rule.


Tensions spiked further over the recent arrest of a Hindu spiritual leader in Bangladesh, currently

Alleged assaults targeting minority Hindus in Bangladesh
and an attack on a Bangladesh diplomatic mission in India featured prominently in Monday's talks between the Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Mohammad Jashim Uddin.

After the meeting, Mr Misri told reporters that there was not any
reason for the mutually beneficial relationship between the
two countries not to continue.

"To that end, therefore, I have underlined today India's desire to work closely with the interim government of Bangladesh," he said.



Mr Misri also said he discussed with Mr Uddin recent developments and relayed "concerns, including those related to the safety, security and welfare of the minorities".


In a media statement later on Monday, India's Ministry of External Affairs said that
Mr Misri highlighted New Delhi's support for "a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh".

"It is not expected (of other countries) to make comments on our internal affairs.
We don't do it for other countries," the English-language daily quoted him as saying.

Following the ouster of Ms Hasina, thought to be a trusted friend of India, minorities ? particularly Hindus ? have reported widespread attacks in the Muslim-majority nation of Bangladesh.

Most Bangladeshi Hindus are thought to be supporters of Ms Hasina's secular Awami League party.

Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure
didn't come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.

And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over
by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy's.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.

Until last year, when she reopened as a members' club
in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to
swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.



Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome - albeit near empty - dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a
loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture. They don't speak, rather communicate entirely via camera
phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.



We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far

PARIS (AP) - Not even a tense tête-à-tête in the gold medal game could spoil the vibe at Paris´ biggest beach party.


Canada´s Brandie Wilkerson and Brazil´s
Ana Patrícia got into a finger-pointing shouting match across the net in the tiebreaking third set of
the beach volleyball final of the Paris Olympics on Friday night.
The referee tried to keep the peace, but it was the Eiffel Tower Stadium DJ who cooled
tempers on the sand by playing John Lennon´s "Imagine"
over the PA system.

The players laughed and clapped. The crowd
applauded and sang along.

Wilkerson was shown a yellow card.

The top-ranked Brazilians left with the gold medal.

"We`re competitors and we are fighting for the same thing: There´s only one gold medal," Wilkerson said during a post-match
news conference in which the two laughed and jokingly put up their
fists as if they were going to brawl it out.

"Immediately after the game, it´s all love and respect," she
said. "We bring out the best in each other, and I´m honored to play against this team."

Ana Patrícia and Duda rallied from an 11-5 deficit to take
the first-to-21, win-by-two first set 26-24, and Canada
won the second 21-12. Brazil opened up a 12-7 lead in the
first-to-15 tiebreaker when, after a joust at the net, Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia began pointing fingers at each
other.

The second referee, the one at sand level, moved out to
separate the two players, but Wilkerson continued to argue and picked up a yellow card.

As the Brazilians got into position to serve for the
next point, the DJ began playing "Imagine," the late Beatle's song calling for unity and peace.


The message resonated with the players.

"What a beautiful opportunity we have to play the finals under the Eiffel Tower against the best in the world," Wilkerson said.
"Like, that, in of itself, is a win."

Wilkerson told reporters afterward that it was all a misunderstanding: She was responding to
her family, cheering in the crowd behind the Brazilians, and Ana Patrícia thought
Wilkerson was taunting her.

"We´re pretty amped up, partners are coming in, refs are coming in. So it was a bit of a mess," Wilkerson said.
"But after the game, and even right when they came to shake our hands, still on the court, there was an immediate hug and just kind of like, `Hey, it´s all good.´"

When play resumed, it took Brazil only five more points to finish off Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes, kicking off a party the sport's spiritual home hadn't seen since hosting the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games at Copacabana.
In Tokyo, the country was shut out at the Summer Games for the first
time since beach volleyball was added to the program
in 1996.

Three years later, Brazil not only returned to the podium but climbed to its top step.


With the Eiffel Tower's strobes sparking in the background and yellow-
and green-wearing fans singing and waving Brazilian flags, the country
was awarded its first women's gold since Atlanta.
(The United States, which had won four of the last five, was shut out in both the men's and women's
tournaments in Paris.)

After the medal ceremony, the Canadians and Brazilians
- along with the bronze-winning Swiss - posed for selfies together.
Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia spoke to each other and hugged; there may have even been an air kiss.


"It was a game thing," Ana Patrícia said.

"Everybody wants to win. But it happens. It´s everybody trying to win, but now everything is OK."

Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes will return to Canada with the country's first beach volleyball medal since the men won bronze at the 1996
Atlanta Games. That team was coached by Humana-Paredes' father.



Switzerland beat Australia in straight sets in the third-place game earlier Friday night to earn the bronze medal.



Nina Brunner and Tanja Huerberli beat Tokyo silver medalists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar 21-17,
21-15 in 39 minutes. It was the second Summer Games in a row that a Swiss team took the bronze medal, coming three years after Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré placed third in Tokyo.


On the men's side, Sweden was set to face Germany for gold on Saturday night,
with Norway and Qatar playing for the bronze.
